Unlike Windows
NT were there is one standard operating system, Linux offers many
different versions including:
| |
Red-Hat |
| |
Caldera |
| |
Mandrake |
| |
Slackware |
These are
the most well known versions, each suited more toward a specific
user need.
Most versions
of Linux contain all the core programs and basic same applications,
although some operate differently, with some versions being command
line based only, whereas others having a Graphical user Interface
(GUI) like Windows. For the novice you may find the GUI versions
easier to use and setup.
The basic
operation and use of Linux is the same across the different versions,
the most common uses being:
| |
WebProxy/Firewall |
| |
WebCache |
| |
WebServer |
| |
E-mail
Server |
| |
Game
Server |
| |
IRCD
Server |
| |
Network/File
Server |
Users requiring
a basic package which will only be used for the above uses then
Red-Hat or Caldera should suffice, users requiring Linux for office
applications (Client Stations) or for Multimedia purposes, then
you might consider using Mandrake or Corel.
If you are
looking for a more advanced server similar to Unix, then go for
Mandrake, this offers advanced features and is great for the advanced
user due to its shortened commands via the console.
If you require
a Linux Server that provides all these services as well as more
possible upgrades in the future, then Mandrake is the recommended
version as it comes with full multimedia suite as well as full
network server and office applications.
Linux is
both flexible and stable at the same time, offering functionality
for either Servers or Clients.
Installing
Linux is again varied throughout the versions, and requires more
knowledge and understanding than say Windows NT. At Salmon we
can help you at every step of the way, from purchasing the right
system, right through to installation and setup.
